Há também uma série de interessantes ensaios filológicos e históricos. Um deles revela detalhes inéditos sobre a história dos Anões, inclusive os nomes de suas sete casas, além de uma grande aliança entre eles e os antepassados dos Rohirrim durante a Segunda Era. Outro mostra como uma simples desavença sobre a pronúncia das palavras aumentou ainda mais a rixa entre os partidários de Fëanor e os demais Noldor.
Mas as coisas mais legais são provavelmente dois textos curtos e inacabados, que deixam um terrível gostinho de "quero mais". São "The New Shadow" (A Nova Sombra, disponível na Valinor), com a continuação nunca terminada de "O Senhor dos Anéis", e "Tal-Elmar", com um raríssimo relato da chegada dos numenorianos à Terra-média vista pelos olhos dos Homens Selvagens.
