Though Tolkien considered the whole universe to be "Morgoth's Ring", if Morgoth did have a physical "ring", it would have been the terrible iron crown he wore, in which he had set the Silmarilli that he had stolen from Fëanor. Though setting the great jewels in the crown burned and blackened his hands permanently, and the wearing of the crown filled him with a deadly weariness, he endured the pain apparently because the Silmarilli contained within them a great power that he wished to control and use for his own dark purposes. Morgoth's ring, a ring of iron that he wore not upon his finger, but upon his head, is perhaps the most powerful and meaningful cipher in Tolkien's symbolic universe, as it combined both the original fire of creation set in the Silmarilli, and Morgoth's own iron will, symbolized by the ring of iron which, for a time, controlled them. Thus, though Morgoth was not able to bend and control all of creation to his own will, he was able to do so symbolically through the setting of the jewels of creation in his crown.
But would Morgoth have taken such a terrible risk just so that he could only symbolically control the universe?
However, Prometheus' mother, the nymph Asia, in return for her son's release, gave the gods the secret of eternal control of the universe, without which they could one day be overthrown. Secure in their power, they could then release Prometheus from his bonds without fear. However, since Zeus had decreed that Prometheus would be chained to the Caucasus forever, he realized that he could not undo his own decree, so in order to get around the letter of the law he constructed an iron ring made of the chain that had bound Prometheus to the rock of the mountain, and then set a chip of the rock Prometheus had been bound to into the ring so Prometheus would still be "bound to the rock" of Mt. Caucasus. Prometheus agreed, and even liked the ring, and thereafter mankind wore rings with inset stones to honor Prometheus, who had gone out of his way to help them. And though the story seems to have a happy ending, the central theme of the story is that the eternal control of the universe is somehow mysteriously related to an iron ring set with a special stone.
It is believed (in Hindu Mythology) that Gods (Vishnu and Asuras) , churned the ocean known as Samudra manthan to get Amrita (Devanagari - अमृत), fourteen treasures jewels ( Ratna ) emerged from the ocean. The fourth Ratna that was emerged is known as Kaustav. It represents pure consciousness shining in all luminous manifestations. When this divine jewel came out of the ocean as the result of churning then it was said by Lord Shiv that nobody in the universe could handle the brilliance and magnificence of this "Mani" since it could corrupt the bearer by infusing in him/her its greed to carry it forever. But it was then decided that Lord Vishnu was the only person in the entire universe who could carry it without falling for its greed and henceforth this jewel was given to him.Since then it is belived that nobody including men, asuras, devas, yakshas, gandharvas, rakhshas etc can carry it without getting corrupt except Lord Vishnu.
Far away in the heavenly abode of the great god Indra, there is a wonderful net which has been hung by some cunning artificer in such a manner that it stretches out infinitely in all directions. In accordance with the extravagant tastes of deities, the artificer has hung a single glittering jewel in each "eye" of the net, and since the net itself is infinite in dimension, the jewels are infinite in number. There hang the jewels, glittering "like" stars in the first magnitude, a wonderful sight to behold. If we now arbitrarily select one of these jewels for inspection and look closely at it, we will discover that in its polished surface there are reflected all the other jewels in the net, infinite in number. Not only that, but each of the jewels reflected in this one jewel is also reflecting all the other jewels, so that there is an infinite reflecting process occurring.[7]
[The tsohar is] a luminous gemstone holding the primordial light of creation. Those who possessed it not only had illumination, but access to the secrets of the Torah and all its powers. God created it, but then hid it away for the sole use of the righteous. The angel Raziel gave it to Adam after the Fall. Adam gave to his children. Noah used it to illumine the Ark (Gen. 6:16). Abraham possessed this stone, and used it to heal all who came to him. According to one legend, he returned to heaven and hung it on the sun. But other traditions track its continued use by the righteous of each generation. Joseph used it for his dream interpretations. Moses recovered it from the Bone of Joseph and placed it in the Tabernacle. Zohar claims that Ben Yochai possessed it in the Rabbinic era (B. B. 16b; Lev. R. 11; Gen. R 31:11; Zohar I:11; Otzer ha-Midrash)
A word study of Hebrew words related to tsohar includes the following: tsor ("a stone", "the edge of a sword or knife", and/or "to cut a rock (or a gem)"; tsoorah ("something that is formed into a certain shape"); tsachar ("to be intensely white", from the root tsachach, "to be bright, white, sunny"); and tsoot ("to burn"). Thus in context the tsohar, like a Silmaril, was a bright, white gemstone that literally shone as bright as the sun. Moreover, a study of the original Hebrew of Genesis 6:16, which describes God's instructions to Noah on how to build the ark, reveals that the text does not describe the creation of a "window" and a "door", but the installation of a tsohar, a bright, white "firestone" that was used to illuminate the interior of the ark. Most interestingly, there are not one but three tsohar described in Genesis 6:16, one to illuminate each of the three decks in the ark — exactly the same number as the number of Silmarilli created by Fëanor.
Solar sails (also called light sails or photon sails) are a form of spacecraft propulsion using the radiation pressure (also called solar pressure) of a combination of light and high speed ejected gasses from a star to push large ultra-thin mirrors to high speeds. Light sails could also be driven by energy beams to extend their range of operations, which is strictly beam sailing rather than solar sailing.
Solar sail craft offer the possibility of low-cost operations combined with long operating lifetimes. Since they have few moving parts and use no propellant, they can potentially be used numerous times for delivery of payloads.
Solar sails use a phenomenon that has a proven, measured effect on spacecraft. Solar pressure affects all spacecraft, whether in interplanetary space or in orbit around a planet or small body. A typical spacecraft going to Mars, for example, will be displaced by more than 1,000 km by solar pressure, so the effects must be accounted for in trajectory planning, which has been done since the time of the earliest interplanetary spacecraft of the 1960s. Solar pressure also affects the attitude of a craft, a factor that must be included in spacecraft design.[1]
The total force exerted on a solar sail may be around 1 newton or less,[2] making it a low-thrust spacecraft, along with spacecraft propelled by electric engines.
It is sometimes known as the Brahma Astra (Astra means 'weapon'). As described in a number of the Puranas, it was considered the deadliest weapon. It was said that when the Brahmastra was discharged, there was neither a counter attack nor a defense that could stop it, except by Brahmadanda, a stick also created by Brahma. The Brahmastra never missed its mark and had to be used with very specific intent against an individual enemy or army, as the target would face complete annihilation. It was believed to be obtained by meditating on the Lord Brahma; it could only be used once in a lifetime. The user would have to display immense amounts of mental concentration. According to ancient Sanskrit writings, the Brahmastra is invoked by a key phrase or invocation that is bestowed upon the user when given this weapon. Through this invocation the user can call upon the weapon and use it via a medium against his adversary.
Since Brahma is considered the Creator in Sanatana Dharma, it is believed by Hindus that Brahmastra was created by him for the purpose of upholding Dharma and Satya, to be used by anyone who wished to destroy an enemy who would also happen to be a part of his (Brahma's) creation. The target, when hit by Brahmastra, would be utterly destroyed. Brahma had created a weapon even more powerful than the Brahmastra, called the Brahmashira. The Brahmashira was never used in war, as it had four times more power than the Brahmastra, i.e. Fourth power square, as the name suggests, since Brahma has Four Heads. Only Arjuna and Ashwatthama possessed the knowledge to summon the Brahmashira.[1]
The weapon was also believed to cause severe environmental damage. The land where the weapon was used became barren and all life in and around that area ceased to exist, as both women and men became infertile. There was also a severe decrease in rainfall with the land developing cracks, like in a drought. There are various descriptions of weapons created by Hindu deities such as Agneyastra, Brahmastra, Garudastra, Kaumodaki, Narayanastra, Pashupatastra, Shiva Dhanush, Sudarshana Chakra, Trishul, Vaishnavastra, Varunastra, and Vayavastra; the personal weapons of the gods, the trishul, chakram and the brahmastra, are the most powerful.
