Was William Shatner wearing a toupee while filming Star Trek?
Yes, William Shatner wore a toupee during his entire time filming Star Trek and evidently loved the toupees provided for him on set so much he continually stole them
Shatner allegedly began to go bald at age 9 but we know for sure that Bill started to wear a toupee somewhere between 1957 and 1958.
1957 was one of last times Shatner ever appeared on screen without his signature toupee.

And when he showed up for filming on Star Trek, the producers noticed that Shatner’s toupees were very cheap and didn’t look good on screen.
Producer Robert Justman commissioned two very expensive hairpieces for Shatner to wear during filming. These were the Cadillacs of toupees and each one cost the show about $1,500.
Captain Kirk’s look was essentially born with Shatner now wearing an (expensive) front lace toup as well as a hairpiece that covered the crown (the pieces may or may not have been separate).

It was a good thing that Justman only ordered two of because at the end of season one one of the toupees went missing after shooting was finished.
“Justman says he knew immediately that it was Shatner. The toupees were made especially for him. They didn't fit anyone else. It had to have been the man behind Kirk.”

And in the seasons that followed, more Shatner toupees ironically went missing as well.
Don’t forget the 80’s T.J. Hooker fro toupee.
So in conclusion, yes William Shatner wore a wig during the filming of the original Star Trek series and took some of them home with him (and didn’t return them nor pay for them) for his own personal use.
