VIRGIN STEELE in Spain

Virgin Steele performed an amazing concert Friday evening at the Atarfe Vega Rock Festival in Spain! They wailed like the TRUE METAL KINGS they are, and all without their drummer! Drummer Frank Gilchriest had some confusion with flight arrangements, and was unable to arrive on time for their set, but the band played on. The audience more than made up for the percussion, by clapping rhythmically and chanting throughout the gig! Singer David DeFeis also did some mighty pounding on the wooden stage, with some serious boots! It was a wild, aggressive performance that only a top notch, highly seasoned group could pull out of themselves. I had a chance to ask David a few questions after the concert. Please read on:
Carlos Lorca: David what happened with your drummer?
David: I don't know all the details as I have not yet spoken to Frank, but I was told that there was some kind of confusion with his plane, and that he would not arrive by the time we were to perform this evening. I am sure that he is very, very upset that he could not be here with us tonight! He was really looking forward to this show.
Carlos Lorca: What did you do when you heard this news?
David: At first I thought it was some kind of joke, but when I found out that it actually was true, I went into action. I received the information that he would not make the concert at 3:00 this afternoon, just as we were planning to leave the hotel to come here. We were scheduled to perform at 6:20, so we had to decide very quickly what to do. I called the rest of the group and told them to meet me in my room, so that we could plan an alternate set to perform. We met, discussed and threw ideas around for about 30 minutes, and then drove off to do the gig.
Carlos Lorca: How do you think the concert went? I mean from my point of view it was incredible. You even managed to get an encore, which is a rare thing on a festival, with the time factor, and all the pressure to keep the bands moving along. And I have to say, the band sounded so confident, and your voice sounded so strong and high!
David: Thank you Carlos. I think it went quite well. The crowd seemed to really enjoy it, and they were really very supportive, which gave us confidence to continue and to deliver the goods.
Carlos Lorca: I spoke to many fans who said they were very happy that you played. They thought you would cancel under such circumstances.
David: Some bands might have cancelled, but not us. We go on regardless. We did not want to disappoint anyone. We came to perform, and that is what we did. It was a magic, by the seat of your pants kind of show. I really enjoyed it.
Carlos Lorca: Any last words for the Spanish fans?
David: Yes. We thank you all for your tremendous show of faith, heart, honor and incredibly loud support! Thanks for the really great welcome, and thanks so very much for making this such a special concert. We will see you all again soon, with our drummer.

Q2 - I know you've spent a lot of time into the making of the upcoming Virgin Steele CD. Can you share a little, or a lot, about what the fans can expect, regarding the overall theme of the album, upon its release?
Defeis - I am mixing now, and all is going pretty well. If the pace continues, then it will most likely be available in the Autumn. Anyway… the new album is an Epic Work based on what happened to Paganism and Gnosticism and the desecration & eradication of the Goddess principle, due to the rise of the "Father-God" principle and then later the rise of "organized" religions. It concerns LILITH and Ancient Sumerian Myths. It is a very Dark Work.
It is perhaps even darker than the darkest VS moments. It is more Nocturnal, Autumnal, Celestial, Vampiric, Paganistic, Lunar, Underground and in general more Extreme. The brutality is if possible even more brutal, (especially mentally speaking), and the tender moments are incredibly Melancholy, Tortured, Forlorn and Torn. It is a Music full of eternal longing, suffering and regret. Long Smoldering passions, lust and despair ignite, consume and die... In the end... a type of hope arises. Not always the "All Conquering Triumph Ideology", but a sense of merging with the perennial consciousness of the Universe, where one day.... a rebirth of sorts might follow... a Beauty born of Grief. I am using more piano or acoustic guitar combined with very deeply tuned heavy guitars. Vocally it is very, very melodic, and I can be tender, aggressive, and bluesy. At times the vocal style is like the bluesy singing on the Life Among The Ruins album, only the Music and Melodies here are very, very different.
“Lilith”.... is very… atmospheric. There are big Epic Anthemic pieces, with always sing-able, & memorable "hooks", but there is also a Dark, Brooding, Moody, Impressionistic, quality that manifests itself throughout. There is over the top orchestration, yet simplicity. Nothing is done for the sake of overindulgence, or complexity for complexities sake. Everything is in proportion, balance and effective for the feelings/sentiments in question. It is a new development I think. A further progression of my compositional style.
These Works are Epic, Bombastic and totally full on Metal, sort of like Conan the Barbarian meets Wagner in a Dark, Black Cave! Perhaps it sounds like.... Cold Moonlight on a Haunted Cathedral. It screams out like a frightening Apparition, a Banshee, or it moans Tragically like the Wailing of the Wind through Accursed Ruins... Images of stark bare trees, clutching at a Dark, Pregnant, Grey/Black Cloud covered Sky while fog stalks the streets are conjured. Several tracks contain a very eerie, haunting quality that would be very much at home in a Horror Movie such as "The Omen", "The Ninth Gate" or "The Exorcist" ... ! All are extremely heavy, moody and melodic. It is music to accompany either the Ending of the World, the Birthing of a New World or both!!!

A postura do Virgin Steele é patética, sempre foi. O problema é que os caras continuam vendendo uma imagem que alem de ser patética, esta uns 20 anos desatualizada.
Bem, eu adoro a banda, tem pelo menos três álbuns deles que eu considero muito ... mas essa pretenção de fazer álbuns épicos e conceituais já encheu.

Uma das minhas bandas favoritas ao lado de Manowar e W.A.S.P. por sinal, essas duas ficaram de lançar albuns novos esse ano também.
Pra mim essa é de longe a PIOR capa do virgin steele, claro que eles tiravam umas fotos meio toscas as vezes, mas eles guardavam pro encarte hahaha.
Mas o pior nessa capa e aquela fonte estilo nightwish que não combina com vs. E olha que não acho ridicula nem a capa do into glory ride, mas essa capa de adão e égua ai passou dos limites.
(é fosco eu também precisava fazer a piada) Se ele estivesse com uma roupa mais épica ia ficar melhor.

"Inconsertável"
Eis a banda mais subestimada do Heavy Metal, ao lado do Running Wild e Fates Warning. O Virgin Steele é uma das únicas que me convenceram e me impressionaram logo de cara, numa primeira ouvida. Eu escuto Rock N´Roll/ Metal desde pivete, lá pelos idos de 1992, mas nunca tinha ouvido bulhufas do VS.
Surpreendo-me com o fato do fabuloso Virgin Steele ser desconhecido por um número gigantesco de fãs de Metal. Pois em qualquer discussão da qual tomo parte, ninguém lembra dessa banda formidável. Virgin Steele reúne todos os adjetivos que outras pessoas aplicam ao Iron Maiden, Gamma Ray, Helloween, Ayreon, Rhapsody of Fire, Masterplan e por aí vai....bandas essas que me fazem ficar apenas indiferente. Defeis, o genio responsável por elaborar as obras-primas que são uma constante na carreira do Virgin Steele, sabe como ninguém mesclar peso com técnica, trazendo composições imponentes onde a força dos riffs de guitarra convivem em harmonia com os arranjos clássicos conduzidos com maestria.
Mas o som do Virgin Steele é realmente impactante, um verdadeiro exemplo de como criar obras épicas com influências fortemente eruditas sem exageros como em bandas do tipo Manowar, Rhapsody e outras que se acham paladinas do Heavy Metal dramático/ épico, whatever. Tudo no som do VS é muito bem pensado, sendo que cada instrumento cumpre o seu papel de maneira a não roubar o espaço de outros a ponto de culminar numa eventual saturação de fórmulas. Até porque DeFeis é multi-instrumentista e de conhecimento abrangente de todos os elementos clássicos que ele incrementa em sua música,o que faz com que ele não se esgote apenas em estruturas limitadas de composição.. Incrível e única é a atmosfera de cada disco. Mesmo nos primórdios, quando fazia um Heavy Metal mais direto e com momentos Rainbow ou Whitesnake, tudo era feito com exímia dedicação e intensidade, sem fingimento ou modismos típicos dessas bandas derivativas de Helloween ou Blind Guardian atuais.
Enfim...o Virgin Steele, ao lado do Running Wild, Fates Warning, Angel Dust, Mekong Delta e Manilla Road, é uma banda como não se vê todo dia, todo ano, toda década. Se eu tivesse que explicar o que é o Heavy Metal pra alguém, pediria pra ouvir coisas como “The Burning of Rome (Cry for Pompeii) “, “ Lion In Winter”, “We Rule The Night”, “ Mind, Body, Spirit”, “Kingdom of the Fearless (The Destruction of Troy)” ou “Victory is Mine”;.
Como explicar o vocal do DeFeis??????? As várias facetas, suas interpretações ora contagiantes e insanas, ora sutis e de beleza ímpar, me impressionam além da conta. Sempre dizia que o finado Freddie Mercury era inalcançavel...mas depois de ouvir toda a discografia do Virgin Steele, meu queixo foi parar no chão(e cavando!!!!). Principalmente nos álbuns mais antigos (do “Guardians of the Flame” ao “Life Among The Ruins”), provavelmente é onde encontro as mais empolgantes, desafiadoras e incendiárias performances de um vocalista de Metal em todos os tempos. É verdade que parece às vezes o Eric Adams (a partir do album Marriage), mas o DeFeis é bem mais flexível e com o tempo tornou-se um vocalista melhor. Uma dica: ouçam a absurda performance do Defeis na balada “Last Rose of Summer”. Além de ser um multi-instrumentista fantástico, DeFeis é um vocalista a ser estudado. Os agudos do cara, os mais impressionantes que já ouvi ao lado do Halford na época do Painkiller, assim como sua agressividade nos vocais mais ásperos, são definitivamente soberbos. É verdade que em cada álbum ele foi amadurecendo e cantando mais contido e de maneira mais reflexiva ou mais agressiva e abusando menos dos agudos, mas sem perder o enorme feeling.
Vi muita gente que disse não ter gostado do último álbum, “Visions of Eden”; isso é absolutamente INCOMPREENSÍVEL! Quem escuta “Adorned with the Rising Cobra “, “God Above God”, “Angel of Death” , “When Dusk Fell” e “Back Light on Black” e mesmo assim não se convence, precisa de ajuda...rsrsrs. É um álbum de uma criatividade incomparável. Não apela para clichês...aliás, o único clichê ali seria a metralhadora da bateria, ainda assim, é ofuscada pela atmosfera deslumbrante do álbum, que vai do épico ao soturno, do belo ao dramático. É o álbum mais rico do Virgin Steele ao lado dos outros 4 MONUMENTOS chamados “Invictus”, “The House of Atreus: Act I & II“ ( Bach Metal!!!) , “The Marriage of Heaven & Hell: Part I e II” e “Noble Savage“. Bem...srsrsrsrr, sobre a breguice das capas...isso não ocorre em todos os álbuns da banda, ainda bem (vide “Invictus” e “The House of Atreus”) . Se for levar por esse lado, bandas como Metallica, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden também possuem capas ruins/ facepalm....embora os conceitos sejam outros.
Já que a galera esboçou um Top 10 do Virgin Steele, vou colocar as minhas preferidas!
Sem ordem, por favor. São músicas irretocáveis! A maioria das músicas está entre as maiores composições da história do Metal. As do video,por exemplo!

Lembrando que a banda vai lançar o novo album no segundo semestre deste ano. É um album dividido em duas partes. A segunda parte será lançada ano que vem. O que posso prever é mais um épico foda deles! Nada menos que isso!

Os agudos do cara, os mais impressionantes que já ouvi ao lado do Halford na época do Painkiller, assim como sua agressividade nos vocais mais ásperos, são definitivamente soberbos. É verdade que em cada álbum ele foi amadurecendo e cantando mais contido e de maneira mais reflexiva ou mais agressiva e abusando menos dos agudos, mas sem perder o enorme feeling.
Vi muita gente que disse não ter gostado do último álbum, “Visions of Eden”; isso é absolutamente INCOMPREENSÍVEL! Quem escuta “Adorned with the Rising Cobra “, “God Above God”, “Angel of Death” , “When Dusk Fell” e “Back Light on Black” e mesmo assim não se convence, precisa de ajuda...rsrsrs. É um álbum de uma criatividade incomparável. Não apela para clichês...aliás, o único clichê ali seria a metralhadora da bateria, ainda assim, é ofuscada pela atmosfera deslumbrante do álbum, que vai do épico ao soturno, do belo ao dramático. É o álbum mais rico do Virgin Steele ao lado dos outros 4 MONUMENTOS chamados “Invictus”, “The House of Atreus: Act I & II“ ( Bach Metal!!!) , “The Marriage of Heaven & Hell: Part I e II” e “Noble Savage“. Bem...srsrsrsrr, sobre a breguice das capas...isso não ocorre em todos os álbuns da banda, ainda bem (vide “Invictus” e “The House of Atreus”) . Se for levar por esse lado, bandas como Metallica, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden também possuem capas ruins/ facepalm....embora os conceitos sejam outros.
Já que a galera esboçou um Top 10 do Virgin Steele, vou colocar as minhas preferidas!
Sem ordem, por favor. São músicas irretocáveis! A maioria das músicas está entre as maiores composições da história do Metal. As do video,por exemplo!

Obs 1: “The House of Atreus: Act I e II“ = Melhor álbum de todos os tempos do Heavy Metal. Quem nunca ouviu, ouça antes de morrer...a estrutura é toda erudita. Bach, Wagner e Beethoven dariam um sorriso de aprovação ao ouvirem essa obra monumental.

Bread and butter
Virgin Steele é demais mesmo. Eles fazem um heavy épico muito classudo, elegante, aristocrático até. Não acho certo comparar eles com o Manowar, pois ambas as bandas são competentes, apenas decidiram seguir por caminhos diferentes de um mesmo estilo.
