Depois de formar o Ayreon, o Ambeon e o Star One, cada um com a sua sonoridade, Arjen agora parte para um novo projeto simultâneo aos anteriores: Stream of Passion.

After Dutch guitarist/composer/producer Arjen Anthony Lucassen had finished his latest endeavour, the Ayreon rock opera The Human Equation, he wanted to do two things: showcase the many talents of Mexican singer Marcela Bovio, one of the vocalists on the Ayreon album, and form a band for the first time in 10 years.

“The response of critics and fans to Marcela’s vocals on the Ayreon album was really great. People were simply blown away.” Arjen explains, “However, already when she was in my studio recording for the Ayreon project, I realized that she had many more talents that I regretted not being able to use at that time. So, hating to let a good thing go to waste, I decided to construct a project completely centered on her singing, composing and writing.”

Two years ago, Marcela entered a vocalist contest through Lucassen’s website. The winner would have a chance to sing on the highly successful Ayreon rock opera series. “When I first heard Marcela’s recordings, it sent shivers down my spine. To find a vocalist who sings with that much passion and power, is rare. Very rare.” And Lucassen should know, he’s worked with over a hundred different vocalists for his many musical projects in the past.

“I refused to start the project with a musical direction in mind, because I wanted Marcela to feel completely free to experiment with some simple acoustic guitar demos I had made. She added her musical ideas, and I went into the studio to work on the songs some more. Then the other band members added their ideas. The music had to develop as naturally as possible, as would happen with a real band, which was an interesting challenge considering that at the moment some band members live thousands of miles apart. The whole thing turned into one big world-wide jam session.Which is very unusual, exciting and a lot of fun.”

To form the band, Lucassen used the Internet to tap into the numerous talents that reside all across the globe. A year ago, Dutch drummer Davy Mickers downloaded a special track from Lucassen’s website to enter a musicians contest, and used it to showcase his incredible drumming skills. And just recently Lucassen discovered Lori Linstruth, an amazingly skilled American female guitarist residing in Sweden, among the members of the online Ayreon Yahoo group. Completing the band are Mexican pianist Alejandro Millán and Dutch bass player Johan van Stratum from the Rock Academy in Tilburg.

The band’s creative juices are flowing to and fro between computers stationed in all corners of the world - recording, writing and matching up musical ideas to form songs. The end result is as diverse and driven as each individual band member. Blending mysterious gothic vocals, metal guitars and atmospheric trip-hop, with haunting pianos and live celli- and violin quartets. The band is currently negotiating an album deal.

Mas sinceramente, eu preferia mesmo era um novo álbum do Star One.

Não querendo direcionar o tópico pra outro assunto, mas o que eu ouvi do Portishead eu não curti não, e foi o disco mais falado, não lembro o nome agora, mas já ouvi faz tempo, talvez possa mudar de opinião se ouvi-lo novamente.

Agora Wax Poetics é excelente, Morcheeba também é bem legal. Tem outras bandas aí, mas agora eu não lembro, até porque não conheço muito o estilo.

Quanto ao Stream of Passion, estou doido pra ouvir puro e simplesmente por ser um trabalho do Arjen Lucassen, antes de tudo.

Eu gosto de Portishead, mas entendo por que voce poderia nao gostar. Passei muito tempo sem gostar, ai um dia alguem me recomendou e escutei de novo. Nao eh a melhor banda do mundo, mas eh bem legal, principalmente na hora e lugar certo.

Nunca ouvi nada do Arjen Lucassen. Estou curioso, onde devo comecar?

Os projetos dele são ligados ao Metal.

Ele tem 3 projetos, o Ambeon, Ayreon e Star One.

O primeiro é o mais longe do Metal, e é mais ligado a música ambient. Eu não tive muito saco quando ouvi não... até porque pra ouvir ambient existem artistas muito mais adequados.

Ayreon é meu projeto favorito dele, e uma das melhor "bandas" de metal existentes na minha opinião. É mais ligado ao Progressivo, o último disco dele The Human Equation é uma ópera-metal que fala mais ou menos sobre um cara que sofre um acidente de carro e entra em coma, e ela vai parar na "mente" dele, daí, há cada dia que passa ele enfrenta um sentimento, e cada dia é um música. É beeem interessante, sem contar com a mistura de elementos: folk, country, rock, progressivo, eletrônico, balada. Aliás, toda a discografia do Ayreon é ótima, pra você aconselharia começar com o Universal Migrator 1: The Dream Sequencer, o Actual Fantasy ou o The Human Equation mesmo.

Já o Star One eu não ouvi muito, mas é mais ligado ao Hard Rock/Heavy metal mesmo. Quem pode te dizer melhor é o Luiz(Lord Sky) e/ou o TT1.


Ayreon - Day Seven: Hope

O Star One tem apenas um disco lançado, Space Metal, de 2001. A linha em si é Prog Metal (Rock progressivo + Metal), só que bem mais pesado que o Ayreon e totalmente voltado para os riffs de guitarra, embora possua um ou outro efeito de teclado também. Inclusive, vários vocalistas de Prog Metal participam do projeto, como Russel Allen (Symphony X, Atomic Soul), Damian Wilson (ex-Threshold), Dan Swäno (Nightingale, Edge Of Sanity), entre outros. É o projeto mais direto dele também, mas na minha opinião é o mais empolgante e o melhor de todos. Há também um CD bônus que traz um medley do Hawkwind (banda de Space Rock a qual eu conheço apenas umas duas músicas e o que eu mais sei sobre os mesmos é que um dia, Lemmy Kilmister tocou baixo lá) e uma cover bem legal pra Space Oddity do David Bowie.

No ano seguinte, com a mesma base do Star One, ele lançou o DVD/CD ao vivo Live On Earth, que traz quase o disco Space Metal inteiro e mais algumas faixas do Ayreon. Vale muito a pena!
