Gareth Edwards Talks Jedha, Rogue One's Jedi Mecca
James Whitbrook
Yesterday 3:19pm

When Gareth Edwards and the cast of Rogue One descended upon Star Wars Celebration last month, we learned a tiny bit about some of the locations we’d see in the movie—including Jedha, a spiritual home for Force users all over the galaxy. But now we have a little more about why the Imperials are so interested in the planet.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Edwards discussed Jedha’s place as a planet of spiritual pilgrimage in a world where the Jedi have been blotted out of existence—it’s now pretty much a place that exemplifies the galaxy we see in the original Star Wars films, one just two decades removed from the Jedi but already treating them like a long-lost myth:

The Force is basically in Star Wars like a religion, and they’re losing their faith in the period that we start the movie. We were trying to find a physical location we could go to that would speak to the themes of losing your faith and the choice between letting the Empire win, or evil win, and good prevailing. It got embodied in this place we called Jedha.

But interestingly, Edwards goes on to tease that the Empire are on Jedha for reasons beyond the fact that it was formerly a Force-user stronghold:

It was essentially taken over by the Empire. It’s an occupied territory… for reasons we probably can’t reveal.

There’s something very important in Jedha that serves both the Jedi and the Empire. It felt very much like something we could relate to in the real world.

It’s not confirmed, but Entertainment Weekly goes on to speculate (and heavily imply) that that something might be a familiar piece of Star Wars lore: a source of kyber crystals, the rare mineral that focuses, and gives color to, the blade of a lightsaber.

But in both the old expanded universe and the Disney canon, kyber crystals were also used in the construction of the Death Star’s superlaser to focus the beam of deadly energy. So if Jedha is a place where they can be found as EW speculates, that’d make sense as something Jedi and Imperial alike would covet. It might not be the case, but for now, it makes a decent amount of sense!

We’ll learn more about Rogue One later this week, when a new trailer is unleashed upon, of all places, coverage for the Rio 2016 Olympics.

That something that’s “very important” on Jedha is more than likely kyber crystals. First introduced in the novel Splinter Of The Mind’s Eye (as the “kaiburr crystal”), these gems are the power source for lightsabers. Starkiller Base’s super-laser was also sourced from kyber crystals, so it wouldn’t be out of place to assume that the original Death Star’s was as well. In case you haven’t figured it out, kyber crystals are the oil of the Star Wars universe.

Everything We Know About Your New Favorite Droid, Rogue One's K-2SO
Germain Lussier
Yesterday 3:20pm

There are loads of exciting things coming with the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story but high on that list is K-2SO, the surly droid voiced and motion-captured by Firefly’s Alan Tudyk. The actor dropped a few new details about the droid’s history and his less-than-sunny personality.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tudyk dropped a few more hints about his sure to be popular character. Like, for example, Kaytoo is seven feet, one inch tall and was formerly a security droid for the Empire. An enforcer and guard, hence the size and demeanor. He’s since been reprogrammed to be a sidekick to Rebel captain Cassian Andor, played by Diego Luna.

The character also has an English accent, because Tudyk saw that as a big difference between the Empire and Rebellion. “I feel like a lot of the Imperial characters are English, and the Rebels tended to be like Han Solo, you think of the Americans,” Tudyk told EW. “And because he was a droid, it made sense that it would be more of a proper accent.”

If you followed the news at Star Wars Celebration Europe, you may know that Kaytoo (as he’s called by his friends) is a bit of a curmudgeon, described as an “old person” by Tudyk. “He can say insulting things very casually if he thinks they’re true,” the actor added.

The droid doesn’t really feel or exhibit emotion, unlike some of his counterparts.

“He’s not an overly emotional guy,” Tudyk said. “He’s not like C-3PO, who’s like a fucking neurotic mess. He’s flappable. Kaytoo is much more in theunflappable category.”

And finally, Kaytoo and Cassian have been inseparable for several years by the time Rogue One starts.

“They’ve been around. They’ve been together for a while, a couple years,” Tudyk said. “He wants what Cassian wants. He loves Cassian, because he freed him. It’s also more paternal in that [Cassian] gave him life and took away the bonds of his programming.”

Odds are we’ll see more of Kaytoo soon as there’s a new Rogue One trailer hitting the Internet on Thursday.

A Major (If Not Particularly Shocking) Rogue OneTheory Has Just Been Confirmed
James Whitbrook
Yesterday 5:45pm

We still don’t really know that much about Rogue One, even though it’s only a few months away, and we know even less about Jyn Erso’s mysterious history. However, new info from the Rogue One prequel novel has just confirmed we’ll be learning some very interesting things about her family before the movie releases.

As part of today’s merchandise-unveiling extravaganza, a new synopsis has been released for James Luceno’s Catalyst, a novel set prior to the events ofRogue One, and it’s given us confirmation of just who Jyn’s father, Galen—played by Mads Mikkelsen—really is:

War is tearing the galaxy apart. For years the Republic and the Separatists have battled across the stars, each building more and more deadly technology in an attempt to win the war. As a member of Chancellor Palpatine’s top secret Death Star project, Orson Krennic is determined to develop a superweapon before their enemies can. And an old friend of Krennic’s, the brilliant scientist Galen Erso, could be the key.

Galen’s energy-focused research has captured the attention of both Krennic and his foes, making the scientist a crucial pawn in the galactic conflict. But after Krennic rescues Galen, his wife, Lyra, and their young daughter, Jyn, from Separatist kidnappers, the Erso family is deeply in Krennic’s debt. Krennic then offers Galen an extraordinary opportunity: to continue his scientific studies with every resource put utterly at his disposal. While Galen and Lyra believe that his energy research will be used purely in altruistic ways, Krennic has other plans that will finally make the Death Star a reality. Trapped in their benefactor’s tightening grasp, the Ersos must untangle Krennic’s web of deception to save themselves and the galaxy itself.

So yes, as many have expected pretty much since Mikkelsen spilled the beans that he played Jyn’s father, Galen Erso did indeed work on the Death Star superweapon—but not entirely willingly.

The interesting addition here is not just a mention of Lyra Erso as Jyn’s mother (a name first heard in casting calls, and assumed as the name of Felicity Jones’ character—so perhaps Lyra may make an appearance in the film after all), but also the fact that Krennic and Galen Erso were old friends before the Death Star project tore their friendship apart.

Suddenly, Jyn’s quest to take down the Empire’s biggest weapon has gotten a lot more personal. Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel is due for release November 15th.

Considero fake.

Actress Playing Jyn Erso’s Mother Revealed Plus Four More ‘Rogue One’ Characters
Kevin Jagernauth

October 4, 2016 11:58 am

With the next trailer for “Rogue One: A Star Wars Storynot slated to arrive until “Doctor Strange” hits theaters next month, there will likely be some slight downtime in Disney and Lucasfilm‘s push for the movie, before they ramp it back up again. So until then, these little passing morsels of news will have to satisfy.

First up, it has been revealed that Valene Kane (“The Fall“) will be playing the mother of Felicity Jones‘ Jyn Erso in ‘Rogue One.’ And given that Kane is actually younger than Jones, the assumption is that her character, Lyra Erso, will only be seen in flashback. However, it’s not clear if that means another actor has been cast to play the younger version of Mads Mikkelsen‘s Dad Erso, Galen. At any rate, Kane has described ‘Rogue One’ to Belfast Live (via Collider) as having “a really edgy independent vibe.” We shall see.

Meanwhile, four more very minor characters have also been revealed (via Making Star Wars) and they are as follows: Moroff, a Gigoran mercenary; the amphibious Rebel Commando Pao who fights with the rebellion; Scarif Stormtrooper Commander who rolls with the Empire; and Hovertank Driver, whose stormtrooper job is self explanatory. My guess is these will be blink-and-miss-em appearances, but hey, I said these were nothing more than morsels.

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” opens on December 16th.
