Shantideva, não é uma questão de ser "São Tomé" ou não. O Lingwilóke e, para todos os casos, eu também escolhemos adotar uma aproximação à obra de Tolkien diferente da maior parte dos leitores: uma aproximação acadêmica, que às vezes nos custa um título de "chatos" ou "pedantes", mas nos retribui com uma boa quantidade de conhecimento prático em nossa profissão, a lingüística. Para nós, afirmações sem confirmações não valem nada. Por mais provável que seja, a hipótese do comentarisda d'O Hobbit é inválida para propósitos de estudo.

Aiaiai, por trás de tudo que Tolkien criou, metade das coisas é uma pegadinha lingüística. =D
Ah, eu não me preocupo muito em saber se isso é verdade ou não, ninguém que eu conheça vai se dar ao trabalho de pegar um livro e procurar u_u até porque eu acho que se colocaram isso num livro acho que o cara teria pelo menos a decência de dizer algo verdadeiro..o.o

Mas bem, Skywalker, mesmo sem nenhuma suspeita sobre a autenticidada disso, seria beeem maneiro se você colocasse o trecho onde ele fala disso ^^
Tem mais comentários ou é só ele quem comenta? Eu gostaria de ver esse livro, acho que nunca vi essa tal edição comentada dO Hobbit o.o

Q: Where did Tolkien get the name Gollum from? I'm under the opinion that he got it from Hebrew lore, "a spirit takes the body of a dead man" which is also called Gollum. Since Gollum killed for the Ring, and was never himself again, it could be said that he lost himself to the spirit of the Ring. A: Tolkien would certainly have known of the Jewish legend of the "Golem"–a man artificially created by cabalistic rites, but the character of Gollum first appeared in The Hobbit (1937), and in the first edition of The Hobbit, Gollum is still a sorry character, but the depth of his character (and his backstory, with his killing of Déagol) is undeveloped, and he is by no means as evil a character as he became in The Lord of the Rings. (In the first edition text of The Hobbit, Gollum even shows Bilbo the way out from under the mountain. This version can be read in the notes at the rear of The Annotated Hobbit.) I’d say that the explanation Tolkien himself gives in The Hobbit is probably near the truth: "And when he said gollum he made a horrible swallowing noise in his throat. That is how he got his name." And when you listen to the recording of Tolkien reading the Gollum chapter of The Hobbit, and you hear the sort of gurgling "Gollum" noise he makes, you can believe him.

Another possibility is suggested in The Annotated Hobbit: "Constance B. Hieatt has noted that ‘Old Norse gull/goll, means "gold, treasure, something precious’" and can also mean "ring," a point which may have occurred to Tolkien." (The Annotated Hobbit, p. 83.)

Como filólogo, Tolkien amava "brincar" com as palavras. Esse lance do Gollum foi mais uma das suas brincadeiras.

Agora sim estamos chegando a algum lugar. Como sou ignorante sobre Old Norse, vou acreditar no que ele diz (o que não significa que seja verdade, já que o próprio autor diz que é algo que PODE ser verdade).

Este é o legal e interessante de Tolkien, sempre nos serpreende, até nos mínimos detalhes e é isso que o torna um dos melhores escritores que já existiram, sempre com surpresas.
