Na verdade achei um pouco confusa a origem de Eriol. Vejam essas passagem das notas:

He [Eriol] belongs to the period preceding the Anglo-Saxon invasions of Britain (as my father, for his purposes, wished to represent it).

... the elvish isle to wich Eriol came was England - that is to say, Tol Eressëa would become England, the land of the English, at the end of the story.

Só que depois é dito que...

Eriol comes to Tol Eressëa in the time after the Fall of Gondolin and the march of the Elves of Kôr into the Great Lands for the defeat of Melko, when the Elves who had taken part in it had returned over the sea to dwell in Tol Eressëa; bur before the time of the 'Faring Forth' and the removal of Tol Eressëa to the geographical positionl of England.

Sei lá, fiquei confuso.

Segundo a wikipedia, a invasão Anglo-Saxã na Grã-Bretanha ocorreu lá pelo século V, então até aí tudo bem - podemos dizer que ele é de um período anterior a este.
Daí eu entendo assim: Tol Eressëa estava em Aman (que é quando Eriol foi visitá-la - depois da queda de Gondolin mas antes do Faring Forth). "Great Lands" seria os nossos continentes do lado de cá -> Terra-média/Europa. Tol Eressëa depois teria saído de Aman e feito parte das "Great Lands" após Faring Forth, em que ela ficaria na posição "certa" da Inglaterra, na Europa. Aí corresponderia à ilha da Grã-Bretanha ou só especificamente a parte da ilha que seria Inglaterra, talvez.

Então ele basicamente imaginou a Inglaterra como um pedaço de Aman.

Acredito que sim. Depois por algum motivo (que espero que seja revelado no fim) integrou-se ao nosso mundo.
