John Byrne e Walter Simonson- quadrinistas desenhando personagens e cenas do Legendarium de JRRT .

Ilmarinen

Shakespeare, Asimov, Tolkien, Niven... e, é claro, Stan Lee.

Offered here is an unpublished ALL PENCIL drawing by famous artist JOHN BYRNE, of MARVEL and DC Comics fame! This terrific original art features TEN characters from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING - Gandalf, Frodo, Strider, Legolas, Gimli, Boromir, Sam, Merry, Pippin and, peeking out, Gollum. This is art you should not pass up, as something like this rarely comes along: Byrne will not take commissions for licensed characters and has stated he will not do Lord of the Rings characters again unless it's on a whim (which still hasn't happened!); there are ten famous and popular characters; and, maybe the most important, JB stopped doing commissions in pencil years ago. The artwork is done on a sheet of standard comic art board which measures approximately 11"x17". John Byrne has also signed the artwork near the lower right corner, just in front of Gollum. The artwork is in excellent condition and I am the second owner. Not showing on the scan is a dedication to the original owner. It is in the lower right corner in the border, and is also in pencil. The reserve is, I feel, very low considering what you're getting here. If JB did this as a commission today, the final price tag would be much higher than the reserve price. Only direct payment via PayPal is accepted, and is required within 48 hours of auction end. Artwork will be mailed flat and sent via USPS Priority Mail. Buyer pays shipping, which is $12 within the U.S., $30 to Canada, and $40 overseas. Insurance, tracking, etc available on request at an additional fee. Multiple art purchases ship together at no additional charge. Art must ship separately from all non-art purchases to avoid damage, so additional shipping fees would apply in those cases. Shipping will occur within 48 hours of receipt of payment. Please email me if you have any questions.

One of my major influences in writing is The Lord of the Rings, I read it when I was in college, and I've read it a few times since. Something I particularly like about it is the sense that there was a world out beyond the reader's immediate vision; you're sitting in the middle of a large woven carpet, and right where you are, all the skeins came together, and they make a thick, tight weave, but the further away they get from you, the looser the weave becomes until the threads run over the horizon. You can't see over there, but you know if you could only walk over the horizon, you could follow them to other stories. I thought that was a wonderful method of construction, especially in a fantasy world. Of course, it turned out that Tolkien had written a ton of stuff, a whole history of Middle Earth beyond just the struggle for the Ring, but it really informed the work. That's something I've tried to suggest in the comics I've done: to imply a larger world beyond just the hero I'm writing about, or his adventures. Back-ups help.

A Balrog...

When I first read The Lord of the Rings, I thought to draw an illustrated version of
the trilogy, just for fun. I never completed the task; I was in college at the time
and had other things to do. But I did a lot of research, collected reference
material, did preliminary drawings, created character studies, and in the end, made
a few finished b/w illustrations. It was really the first time I ever put that sort
of effort and concentration into drawing and illustration. I didn't know anybody who
made a living drawing back then; I was a geology major myself. So essentially, I
just invented my 'process' as I went along.

This drawing is based on my designs for the Balrog in Volume 1 from back in the day.
He's a bit beefier than my earlier versions but similar. I read the material
pretty carefully at the time trying to suss out an accurate design. As I recall,
Tolkien's description of the Balrog's wings was somewhat obscure. It seemed to
leave open the possibility that the wings of shadow might have actually been cast
shadows rather than real wings attached to the Balrog.:sabia: So I've left the wings here
as tonal shapes without too much specific definition.:sabia:

The drawing was done on legal-sized paper with the usual Pentel automatic pencil. I
had to tape three sheets together in the end to get all of the figure in, as he was
a good deal wider than my original sheet of paper. The drawing ended up being 17 x
14. I've done a little Photoshopping to clean up the seams, the gray smudges of
pencil on the backgrounds, and left some of the tone in the figure because I liked
the way it looked.

"Doom, doom came the drum-beat and the walls shook."
"There was a rush of hoarse laughter, like the fall of sliding stones into a pit; amid the clamour a deep voice was raised in command. Doom, boom, doom went the drums in the deep."
"Every now and again the drum-beats throbbed and rolled: doom, doom.
Suddenly at the top of the stair there was a stab of white light. Then there was a dull rumble and a heavy thud. The drum-beats broke out wildly: doom-boom, doom-boom, and then stopped."

"Along this they fled. Frodo heard Sam at his side weeping, and then he found that he himself was weeping as he ran. Doom, doom, doom the drum-beats rolled behind, mournful now and slow; doom!"
"They looked back. Dark yawned the archway of the Gates under the mountain-shadow. Faint and far beneath the earth rolled the slow drum-beats: doom. A thin black smoke trailed out. Nothing else was to be seen; the dale all around was empty. Doom. Grief at last wholly overcame them, and they wept long: some standing and silent, some cast upon the ground. Doom, doom. The drum-beats faded."

“No taste of food, no feel of water, no sound of wind, no memory of tree or grass or flower, no image of moon or star are left to me. I am naked in the dark, Sam, and there is no veil between me and the wheel of fire. I begin to see it even with my waking eyes, and all else fades.”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheel_of_fire
