Han Solo: Uma História Star Wars (Solo: A Star Wars Story, 2018)

Report: Lucasfilm Was So Concerned About Alden Ehrenreich's Han Solo Performance It Brought in an Acting Coach
James Whitbrook

The fallout from Chris Miller and Phil Lord’s shocking exit from the Han Solofilm a week ago continues, with more and more details about the rift emerging day by day. One new report even claims that Lucasfilm weren’t just unhappy with Miller and Lord’s approach: they were concerned about the performance they were getting from star Alden Ehrenreich.

Speaking to sources close to both the production of the movie and the ousted directors Miller and Lord, the Hollywood Reporter alleges multiple situations indicative of a deep, growing difference between the duo and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. From a slow pace during filming to a lack of extra takes to use in the editing process, both Kennedy and Solo co-scriptwriter/producer Lawrence Kasdan began expressing concerns about the direction Miller and Lord were pushing the second Star Wars anthology film. Likewise, sources speaking to THR claim Miller and Lord were beginning to feel like encroaching pressure from Kennedy and Kasdan was stifling their creative freedom during the production process.

In an attempt to change things up when filming moved from London to the Canary Islands in May this year, Lucasfilm not only replaced the editor of the film, Chris Dickens, with longtime Ridley Scott collaborator Pietro Scalia—they also asked Miller and Lord to bring on an acting coach (as THR notes, while it’s not unusual for acting coaches to be hired, it’s unprecedented for a film so late in production) for star Alden Ehrenreich, after registering dissatisfaction with the performance Miller and Lord were getting out of the man tasked with stepping into Harrison Ford’s leather boots.

When Kennedy requested Kasdan head to the set after these shakeups didn’t lead to the changes they were looking for, Miller and Lord pushed back at his presence—said to be similar to Tony Gilroy’s late-game involvement in completing Rogue One after its own production troubles—and a day later, Kennedy made the decision to fire the directors. Alarmingly, one source speaking to THR claims that upon the announcement to the crew that Ron Howard would step in to take over the film a day after Miller and Lord’s firing, applause broke out. But while Miller and Lord are now off the film, sources claim that Howard is very willing to use much of the footage they shot to help complete the movie.

We’ve reached out to Lucasfilm for a response to the allegations in the report—which you can read in its entirety at the link below—and while we’ve yet to hear back at the time of publication, we’ll update this story when and if they respond.

Artwork & Rumors Flying Around For ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’

We’re five months away from the release of “Solo: A Star Wars Story” and unlike the usual Disneypromo machine which can start over a year in advance of any of their movies, there was been nothing yet. Of course, Phil Lord and Chris Miller‘s surprise exit from the film mid-production threw a spanner in the works, but nonetheless, there are no official stills, no trailers, and only one very plain poster. Even by this point before the launch of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” there was a trailer and stills. However, some information of sorts is starting to leak.

First, some kind of marketing material/artwork has emerged on a totally random Russian merchandise licensing site (via Superbro Movies), providing a rendering of Alden Ehrenreich‘s Han Solo, Emilia Clarke‘s Kira, Donald Glover‘s Lando Calrissian, and of course, Chewbacca. I’ll leave it to nerds to pick apart or praise at their will.

Meanwhile, ScreenGeek (yeah, me neither) is claiming that a source has told them Disney is expecting ‘Solo’ to tank. They write:

Disney is bracing themselves for the Han Solo movie to bomb. They were worried about it before all The Last Jedi controversy, but now they’re essentially writing Solo off. The lead actor, Alden Ehrenreich, can’t act, and they had a dialogue coach on hand for all of his scenes. On top of that, the script is unworkable. It’s going to be a car crash.

In fairness, it was revealed over the summer that Lucasfilm hired an acting coach for Ehrenreich, because they were unhappy with the performance he was giving in the Lord and Miller take on the material. So perhaps ScreenGeek is confusing a dialogue coach (why he would be using one, unless Han Solo now has a weird accent?) with an acting coach. Either way, take it all with a bag of salt.

“Solo: A Star Wars Story” opens on May 25, 2018.

Mas pelo menos tem os filmes normais de SW por que ficar ansioso, que, para mim, esses dois novos (e provavelmente os que virão) são os únicos que existem, o resto é só história...

Duas coisas:

Jonathan Kasdan Says ‘Solo’ Was Inspired By Michael Mann Films ‘Heat’ And ‘Thief’
Charles Barfield

It’s almost always a bit cringe-worthy when big blockbuster, popcorn filmmakers reference masterworks when trying to describe their own films. We see it a lot with Marvel Studios, where filmmakers always try to compare their latest superhero romp to some classic film. Recently, the writers of “Avengers: Infinity War,” compared their film to Robert Altman’sNashville,” for example. Well, one of the writers of the upcoming “Solo: A Star Wars Story” has a couple films he thinks line up well with the upcoming Han Solo origin story.

“Part of the challenge is to come up with new, inventive kinds of action we haven’t seen in ‘Star Wars,’” writer Jonathan Kasdan said, in an interview with Empire. “We often referenced ‘Heat’ and ‘Thief’ as high-end criminals doing serious jobs that involve huns and big hijackings.”

Oh boy. So, the young Kasdan thinks that there are elements of ‘Solo’ that resemble “Heat” and “Thief,” which are incredible films by the master of crime filmmaking, Michael Mann. No offense to those who worked on ‘Solo,’ but we doubt there’s going to be any comparisons between that film and “Heat.”
