The President Of Lucasfilm Eases Our Worries About Han Solo Movie

Even the biggest Star Wars fan was stunned when Disney announced an upcoming Han Solo-centric, standalone film. Would they ruin one of the best characters ever? Well, the president of Lucasfilm doesn’t want that and has offered some encouraging new details on the solo Solo film.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy talked at length about the untitled Han Solo Anthology movie, written by Jon and Lawrence Kasdan, directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and scheduled for release May 25, 2018.

First up, she revealed Solo’s age range in the film. “He’ll definitely be probably in the high teens, low 20s,” Kennedy said to the magazine. “We’re not introducing you to a 10-year-old Han Solo.”

That’s what we figured. The character has to be old enough to carry a movie, but young enough to be distanced from the early 30s Solo from A New Hope. As for who that actor may be, they haven’t started casting in anyway yet.

So will this film just run down a list of events in Solo’s past we’ve heard about in other movies? No, not at all, according to Kennedy.

There’s got to be a reason for [the stand-alone film] to be. And obviously the thing thatStar Wars has always done so well is it doesn’t spend a lot of time [explaining] the stories that have come before. We don’t want to do that either. We don’t want to spend time going back and answering a lot of questions that, quite frankly, I don’t think people want answered.

Right there. That quote should make Solo fans breath easy. We’re surely much more comfortable with an important, singular Solo story from his past, instead of a movie where it’s a laundry list of references. “Hey Lando, nice ship, want to play some cards? Then I’ll go on the Kessel Run. I also have to dump this cargo Jabba gave me.” Oh, wait, Kathleen Kennedy just broke in again.

I think the key here is that we are identifying an event or events in Han Solo’s life that gives you some idea of who he is and why he is the character we have all known to love.

Oh Kathleen, you keep saying the right things. I love you. You know.

The film will also have some of Solo’s comedic tone. As if the hiring of Lord and Miller didn’t tune us into that already. More Kennedy:

You can imagine, given who we’ve chosen to come in and direct, it should be very entertaining and funny. Han Solo is the character inside Star Wars that everybody knows has a wit and sense of humor. So that’s what this should be.

Let’s recap. The Solo movie will be a funny adventure story that helps inform the character without demystifying him, played by someone in their early 20s? All of that sounds like a bullseye to Greedo.

The Young Han Solo Movie Will Explain How He and Chewbacca Came To Be

Fans know very little about the 2018 Han Solo movie, except that it’ll be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. But the CEO of Disney, Bob Iger, just dropped a key piece of information about a supporting character in the film. A very obvious, very tall, and very hairy supporting character.

“We have other [stand alone movies] in the works, including one which is an origin story about Han Solo and [Chewie],” Iger said according to The Wrap. “And that’ll come after Star Wars 8 in 2018. And then there will possibly more thereafter.”

On the surface, Chewbacca being in the film seems pretty obvious, but this is the first confirmation of his presence. In fact, beyond the fact that Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has been quoted saying the young Solo will be played by an actor in his twenties, we hadn’t heard anything in regards to specifics in the movie. If Iger’s to be believed, we now know it’ll answer one of the biggest mysteries in the Star Wars canon: How did Han Solo and Chewbacca meet, and why is their bond so strong?

To be honest, this is one of those questions that never needed to be answered. They’re friends and partners. But it will kind of exciting to see exactly how it actually came together.

The currently untitled Han Solo Star Wars Story will be released May 25, 2018. Casting is currently underway.

ALDEN EHRENREICH SERÁ O JOVEM HAN SOLO, DIZ SITE

Good news: Speaking at the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival recently, Lawrence Kasdan offered an update on when to expect the film:

Kasdan: Oh, I think so! You know, Chris Miller and Phil Lord are going to direct it. They’re great, funny and imaginative and we’ve had a great time together. My son [Jon] and I wrote the script and Chris and Phil are working on it and they’re about to move to London to start shooting in January. And it should be fun.

2018 is the release date?

Kasdan: Yes. They’re actually scheduled for May. The [other Star Wars films] are falling on Christmas — Rogue One and Episode 9. Han will come before Episode 9.

The Han Solo Movie Has the Best Star Wars Script Ever, Says Star Wars Employee
Germain Lussier
Yesterday 1:38pm

More than almost anything in the world, we want the 2018 Han Solo movie to be great. On paper, it’s a terrifying idea to solidify a backstory for such an iconic character, but at least one person assures us the script is amazing (although he probably has to say so).

That person is Iain McCaig, a talented concept artist who has worked on and designed many iconic films and characters since the 1990s, which include Star Wars Episodes 1, 2, 3 and 7. McCaig recently appeared at a conference in New Zealand and talked about a bunch of cool, behind-the-scenes Star Wars stuff. The most interesting bit is his reaction to Lawrence Kasdan’s early draft of theHan Solo movie, which he read before The Force Awakens was released.

Star Wars News Net paraphrases McCaig’s statement at the conference as follows:

[The Han Solo script is ] by far the best Star Wars script, and one of the best scripts period, that I have ever read. I laughed, I cried, I did all the things you should do when reading a good script. You’re in for a treat.

A few notes, obviously. First, this is a paraphrase, not an exact quote. Second, this is based on a script that was likely done before Kasdan’s son Jon came on board, as well as directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. So it probably has gotten better since then. And third, what else is McCaig going to say? That it was bad?

To be fair, there is plenty of evidence back up this statement. The fact Han Solo is the second Star Wars Story film, for one. That slot was originally supposed to go to the movie Josh Trank was going to make (rumored to be Boba Fett) but when he left, this movie moved up at least three years. The implication there is things were coming together well. There’s also the mass interest in the film from every actor in Hollywood. And while it would be easy to say “Who wouldn’t want to play Han Solo in a Star Wars movie?” the answer is “A lot of people” if the script wasn’t good.

So, I’m going to put on my optimist hat and start lining up at the 2019 Oscar ceremony where the currently untitled Han Solo Star Wars Story is sure to take home Best Picture. Or, I’ll settle for an entertaining, emotional film that does the character justice.

The film is currently scheduled for release in May 2018.

The Right Directors Are Making the Han Solo Movie, and Here's the Proof
Germain Lussier
Today 3:45pm

Sunday at Star Wars Celebration Europe, directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller finally introduced the actor they chose to play Han Solo: Alden Ehrenreich. But perhaps more importantly, the 21 Jump Street and Lego Movie directors talked about their love of the character, proving that the galaxy’s favorite scoundrel is in good hands.

“I sort of relate to him,” said Phil Lord on the Future Filmmakers panel Sunday afternoon. “He doesn’t want to do anything that he’s told. When told not to do something, it makes him want to do it more. [He’s] very sarcastic and at the end of the day he’s unreasonably optimistic. I think that’s why we fall for that guy and we got so excited about making this movie. This kind of dichotomy between this grouchy seemingly cynical guy with the biggest heart in the galaxy. And to me that’s a great thing to make a movie about.”

“He’s a maverick, he’s a scoundrel, he’s clever but he’s not smart and he wants to present himself as this cool, tough guy but in the end he always does the right thing and that’s why you love him so much and why he’s one of the most iconic characters of all time,” added Miller.

Lord and Miller get the inherent contradiction that’s made Han Solo one of the most loved character in cinema, and it’s one of the reasons Lawrence Kasdan, co-writer of not just the Solo movie, but The Force Awakens, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, pushed hard for the duo to direct. “He was quite vocal about it in a way only Larry can be,” said Lucasfilm’s SVP of development and story group leader, Kiri Hart. “He had a tremendous amount of belief in them and a feeling that they were just the right people to do this. That ended up being really meaningful to all of us as we went forward and put the whole thing together.”

Lord and Miller just moved to London to work on the Solo movie full-time and are currently working on the script with Lawrence and Jake Kasdan, as well as overseeing pre-production and set-building. They hope to start production early in 2017, with the movie targeted for summer 2018 release.

Does Disney Have Plans for a Whole Han Solo Prequel Trilogy?
James Whitbrook

When the Star Wars anthologies—now Star Wars stories—were announced, the intention would be that they were standalone, one-off films. They told a story, whether it was the theft of the Death Star plans, or the early life of Han Solo, and then were done. But a new rumor suggests that at least one Star Wars story could develop into its own franchise.

The New York Daily News is reporting that when hiring Alden Ehrenreich to play the young smuggler, Disney actually signed him on for a three-film deal. The site’s insiders claim it’s because executives at Lucasfilm and Disney are currently not just enchanted by the young actor’s auditions, but with the idea that the Han Solo film (or films) can tell a wide variety of stories within theStar Wars universe, that don’t necessarily have to involve the hero fighting the Empire.

Although the whole point of these standalone films was to tell a one-and-done story, if there’s truth to this report it makes a good bit of sense of Disney and Lucasfilm. Not only would it tie down Eherenreich for the potential to do more films, but it’s also been very clear they want to do a lot of stuff with Han Solo, even after the character perished in The Force Awakens. While projects likeRogue One might stay as one-offs, a character like Han has too much potential to stick to just one movie.

Late yesterday evening, the Wrap reported that the film was looking to include a young Lando Calrissian. However, there’s already been an update to that rumor, courtesy of Birth Movies Death: not only have they added further veracity to the talk of Lando’s role in the film, they claim that none other than Donald Glover is Lucasfilm’s firm favorite for the role.

According to Birth Movies Death, no offer has been made yet, and there’s uncertainty as to if Glover would actually take one—but just as Alden Ehrenreich was the first choice for the role of Han Solo, Glover is allegedly much the same for Lando.

Zoe Kravitz, Tessa Thompson & Naomi Scott On Shortlist For Female Lead In ‘Han Solo’ Movie
Kevin Jagernauth

October 6, 2016 9:02 am

Phil Lord and Chris Miller know that the entire world, and diehard “Star Wars” fans, are closely watching their every move with the upcoming spinoff about the the adventures of young Han Solo. The directing duo went through a long casting process before landing on their lead, Alden Ehrenreich, and with cameras not set to roll until next year, they are still taking as much time as needed to find the players to surround him with. The search for Lando Calrissian continues, thoughDonald Glover is apparently in the pole position for the job, and now, the filmmakers are also looking at who should play the female lead.

Variety reports that Zoe Kravitz (“Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Divergent,” “Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them“), Tessa Thompson (“Creed,” “Dear White People,” “Westworld“), and Naomi Scott (“The Martian,” “Power Rangers“) have all tested for the role. The trade stresses that a final decision could still be a couple of weeks away, and even more, it might not be any of the above in the end. However, if anything, it does indicate that Lord and Miller are aiming for a diverse cast.

There’s no word yet on who exactly the female character is, and that will likely be the case for a while. But hopefully there will be some more clues when someone is chosen for the role. The Han Solo spinoff opens on May 25, 2018.

Han Solo ‘Star Wars’ Spinoff Eyes Woody Harrelson For Mentor Role
Kevin Jagernauth
January 3, 2017 6:54 pm

If there’s pair of mainstream directors we’re willing to follow blindly down the path of whatever they’re doing, it’s Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The duo turned two properties that no one took seriously — “The Lego Movie” and “21 Jump Street” — into major franchise success stories, and terrific movies to boot. And so, in Lord and Miller we trust as they head into the “Star Wars” spinoff centered on a young Han Solo, and this latest casting news.

Variety reports that Woody Harrelson is in early talks join the spinoff playing the mentor of Alden Ehrenreich‘s smuggler. I dunno, if you ask me, Han Solo’s rebellious spirit and devil-may-care attitude is there precisely because he doesn’t have a Jedi-like guide to lead him through life. But again, in Lord and Miller we trust, and maybe they have a fun spin on the “Star Wars” trope, and it could be that the character description is broad, and there’s more to the part.

Donald Glover and Emilia Clarke are the other cast members of the movie so far, which is due in cinemas in 2018, reportedly in the now standard “Star Wars” month of December.

‘Han Solo’ Directors Phil Lord & Chris Miller Drop Out Of Their ‘Star Wars’ Movie
Rodrigo Perez

June 20, 2017 7:48 pm

Well, this certainly can’t be good for the series. With the movie in the midst of production, filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller have dropped out of Lucasfilm‘s untitled Han Solo spin-off film according to official “Star Wars” website. It could be a forceful split considering they’re right in the middle of the process, but everyone’s sounding incredibly diplomatic.

“Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm in a statement.

“Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew,” stated Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Update: Variety has more and says there were major clashes from the start between Lord, Miller and Kathleen Kennedy and writer/producer Lawrence Kasdan. “It was a culture clash from day one,” a source told the trade. “She didn’t even like the way they folded their socks.”

The film has been shooting in London since February and apparently there are several weeks left on the shoot. It is unknown who will finish production and evidently, re-shoots are scheduled for later in the summer.

This is nearly unprecedented: a huge summer blockbuster, a “Star Wars” movie no less, that has lost its filmmakers during its shoot. This isn’t the first time a new “Star Wars” film found trouble. Last year, Tony Gilroy was brought in to write and direct several weeks of Gareth Edwards‘ “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” While the movie turned out great and fans shrugged off the idea of the reshoots, another director coming on board to steer and take over a movie (Gilroy ended up being the post-production director/supervisor on the film too), is a huge deal that might not have been appreciated at the time.

From all accounts including the actors’, ‘Rogue One’ in many ways had to rethink itself midway through. The official story was Gilroy had to help bring the movie in on time as they rewrote in the moment and re-envisioned characters and scenes. And while that may be true, again, another filmmaker coming on board (two actually, let’s not forget Simon Crane‘s involvement), means ‘Rogue One’ was in need of serious help. Before that, Josh Trank was essentially quit/fired before his solo “Boba Fett” film could even start thanks to the news of his reportedly unhinged behavior on the set of the disastrous production of “Fantastic Four.”

No reason has been given for Lord/Miller split, but look for that story to come out soon enough along with possible replacement directors to finish the job. It can’t be stressed enough — this is major. Lord and Miller and Lucasfilm couldn’t even wait for post-production to end and find a path to resolve their differences together. Lucasfilm clearly did not like the direction the film was taking and had to take over lest they be stuck in the editing room with a product they didn’t believe in.

The untitled “Star Wars” spin-off movie stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, while Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson and Donald Glover also appear. Lord and Miller are known for “The LEGO Movie,” and ’21 & 22 Jump Street.’ As of right now the May 25, 2018 release date still stands, but who knows if that will hold now.

Ron Howard Front-Runner To Replace Phil Lord & Christopher Miller On Han Solo Spinoff
Kevin Jagernauth

June 21, 2017 9:09 am

The “Star Wars” franchise has no shortage of historical moments, but few have been as shocking as last night’s news that directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have exited the currently filming Han Solo spinoff with weeks left of filming on the movie. Even the rockiest of blockbuster productions rarely see directors leave before scheduled filming is set to end, but it’s becoming clear that the Han Solo saw a creative rift between Lord/Miller and Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedythat couldn’t be mended. The most important question right now is who will guide the remaining weeks of film and this summer’s reshoots, and it hasn’t taken long for some names to emerge.

Ron Howard has emerged as the frontrunner to take over the Han Solo film. His name might not be the most exciting one for fans, but he’s a veteran who has handled multiple tentpole pictures, who can bring an experienced hand to what I can only imagine is a bit of a chaotic production at the moment. He’s also a longtime friend of George Lucas, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he was also a secret “Star Wars” nerd (not to mention he helmed the Lucasfilm production “Willow” many moons ago). The two other names being floated also bring seasoned chops to the table: longtime “Star Wars” writer Lawrence Kasdan (who also penned ‘Han Solo,’ and is reported to have butted heads with Lord and Miller, along with Kennedy) and Joe Johnston, who mostly notably helmed “Captain America: The First Avenger” for Marvel, which is also under the Disney umbrella.

Looking at this more broadly, it’s clear that a disconnect is emerging between Kennedy and co. aiming to hire fresh young voices for their “Star Wars,” and how much risk they are willing to take with this billion dollar brand. Gareth Edwards managed to stick around ‘Rogue One’ and ride out what were some very big shifts in the story that was being pulled together; huge portions of that movie were completely overhauled.

However, Lord/Miller have such a distinct storytelling style and tone, it’ll be interesting to see how much of their flavor remains in the movie, and more key, just how extensive this summer’s reshoots will be. My guess is that it’s going to be on the scale of ‘Rogue One’ at the minimum, and that Kennedy has already enlisted some kind of creative team to get rewrites going right now. There is probably lots of stuff going on behind-the-scenes that we’re going to learn about in the weeks and months to come. If Kennedy had reservations and concerns throughout the filming of ‘Han Solo’ — and it certainly sounds like she did — it would only make sense if she’s been preparing a backup plan. Indeed, it says something that the same night both camps issued their formal press statements, the frontrunners to take over emerged.
