The Favela Painting project started in 2005 when dutch artists Haas&Hahn (Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn) had the idea of creating public artworks in favelas in Rio de Janeiro. Not just to beautify, but also to create a dialogue with their surroundings. After several successful projects, the image of a square painted in a design of radiating colors yielded worldwide fame and transformed Rio into 'one of the world’s 10 most colorful places', according to CNN. Haas&Hahn were invited to show their work at the New York based gallery Storefront for Art & Architecture, followed by an invitation from the Philadelphia Mural Arts program to paint several complete blocks in a dilapidated area in North Philly. The artists get invited worldwide to teach, to speak about their work, consult cities on community art projects and look at possible locations for future projects. They have recently restored their first painting in Rio and are currently planning a grand return to paint an entire favela.

Over the years the Favela Painting Project has grown into a professional organization, based in the Netherlands. It’s focus is: mobilizing people to transform their own communities into social art works of monumental size, to beautify and inspire, combat prejudice and attract positive attention, while offering opportunity and economic stimulus.

Atualização sobre o projeto:

Dear supporters,

Ben, Nanna, Allard, Manouk, Angelo, Dre, Ambar, Seven, Penny, Jeroen and Marta of Team Favela Painting would like to thank you for believing in our dream, backing our campaign and enabling the Favela Painting project to return to Brazil.

It's been hard work, with an amazing result. We are proud, humbled, but most of all extremely excited! So what's next?

Now that we know that we can return to Brazil, it’s time for serious planning. The Kickstarter funding will enable us to build the project base, set up our first crew and get us on our way to paint the first batch of houses, all in the course of 2014.

First up will be a visit to the community and all stakeholders, to discuss and define outlines, ambitions and exact location of the project in depth. Our crew in Rio will start prep work to get walls ready, doing repairs and plastering where needed, while our team in Holland will fine tune production plan and define color- and design language. We aim to start painting somewhere around spring 2014.
We will keep fundraising and looking for strategic partners, to enable us to expand the project, maybe one day making it autonomous and self sustainable. Right now we will go into serious work mode, so it might become a little quiet around us, until we are ready to move to the next phase. Until that time we will keep you updated through our newsletter.

Please note that we don’t have any positions for volunteer-painters (as they are hired locally) but any ideas for project-additions, be it educational, economic, academic, and constructive questions on Favela Painting, Haas&Hahn or other projects are welcome via info@favelapainting.com.

All backers that opted for rewards will be contacted individually, to gather shipping addresses and all necessary info.

That’s all for now - let’s get started - thanks again - tchau!!!

It was almost ten years ago, when Haas&hahn asked themselves ‘what would it look like when one would paint a favela?’. They started their first project - a small mural - and never stopped painting, the projects growing in scale and production. In 2010, a whole square painted, became one of Rio’s most famous destinations. In 2013, they launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds to realise their ultimate dream: to paint an entire favela hill. They figured they needed about a million dollars, but 100K would get the process started. Within 40 days, about 1700 people managed to put together 117.000 dollars and they went back to Rio.

Upon arrival, the artists - together with their local crew - led by local artist Angelo Campos, began looking for locations. They chose a small square to start plastering houses and hired a crew of local masons to plaster everything. For several months wall after wall was plastered, in preparation to be painted in a colorful design.. Unfortunately, the political situation shifted dramatically and halted the project. The war between police and drug gangs made the work too dangerous to continue. Angelo advised Haas&Hahn to figure out a plan B and relocate to a safer location. Together, they chose to move to the main avenue, that runs straight through the community - Not only a safer place to work, but also more visible to everyone - and therefore maybe even a better location to paint than the square, where they started out...

Together with Angelo, Haas&Hahn put together a crew of local youngsters, and rented a small shop on the Ave as their Headquarters. They started prepping houses, experimenting with new materials and techniques, using air-powered paint guns, to spray plaster and acrylic primer on the walls, to ensure a proper surface to paint on. Jeroen worked on a color range, that could be used to derive other colors from. He taught Igor from the crew the whole process, so he could continue producing the color range. They started painting simple color bands - and re-designed on the go. Results were evaluated, changes implemented and re-evaluated until everyone was satisfied - The walls became a sort of real-time Photoshop file. Meanwhile, the crew members became experts at setting up and adjusting the design - using levels, rulers and their eyes to make it all fit perfectly.

After a couple of weeks, the crew was ready to take over the process, as Haas&Hahn left behind a functioning design and production-system. The artists kept in touch with the crew every other day, to help them move on house-after-house. Slowly but surely, the whole main street of Vila Cruzeiro was transformed into a corridor of art and color.

As the face if the street is changing, the end of the Kickstarter funding is slowly coming in sight. The Favela Painting Foundation is looking for additional financing so Haas&Hahn and their crew can continue the process and ideally - hire more people to take part in the process of transforming their community!
